Predictably, mere hours (minutes?) after the deranged Las Vegas gunman deliberately targeted and shot over 500 concert-goers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, the Left began clamoring for “gun control.” But would stricter “gun control” laws really have stopped the Vegas would-be assassin from obtaining his rifles and ammunition in the first place?
No, not at all and here’s why: Having committed no known crimes beforehand that would prohibit him from legally owning firearms in Nevada, the Vegas shooter had the right to own some–if not all–of his rifles. We know he passed at least two of the Left’s beloved background checks and as far as we know at this point, he also followed all the “gun control” purchasing laws of his state. Even the reported bump stock modifications that the shooter used on his rifles to create rapid-fire ability were Obama administration-era approved.
Much to the chagrin of the Left, American citizens–even potential mass murderers–still have the right to own firearms. Even if we eventually find some of the Vegas shooter’s firearms were obtained illegally (and some probably were), the Left will call for more “gun control” laws to be implemented as they always do, but they don’t recognize the harsh truth is no amount of “gun control” laws will ever stop the criminals nor the crazies who are intent on mass murder.
Sure, the Left would like to limit that right as much as possible, however, as most of us know, our rights as Americans are secured by the U.S. Constitution. The Second Amendment secures our right to own firearms, while the Fourth Amendment authorizes police to arrest people only with probable cause and factual evidence. In other words, sorry Leftists, but even the Vegas shooter had rights before he committed his heinous act and no matter how you twist it, our unalienable rights guaranteed by the Constitution are not up for negotiation.
One must actually commit a crime before laws—even do-gooder “gun control” laws—can kick in. It can never be proven with 100 percent certainty what someone like the would-be Vegas assassin will do in the future. This is America, after all, not a totalitarian country where the police can simply arrest citizens based on accusations, suspicions, or outright lies. We have the right to not be falsely accused.
It’s a very slippery slope, indeed, to even think about taking away someone’s rights based on what one might do, not what one has done. Besides, who would decide who might carry out future crimes? Which type of crimes would be considered? Where would that sort of control stop?
Of course, we know the Left’s call for “gun control” will never stop until all privately owned firearms are confiscated and destroyed; make no mistake, that is the Left’s ultimate aim. But until and unless we can see into the future, mass shootings will happen regardless of the Left’s “gun control” efforts. Evil exists and law-abiding Americans should be able to purchase firearms to defend ourselves from it. Our right to bear arms shall not be infringed and will ultimately save more lives than the Left’s ineffectual “gun control” laws ever will.
