To The Bended Knees Of The NFL….Take A Moment And Consider The Thoughts Of Ray Charles

Ray Charles singing "America, the Beautiful" at the World Series on October 28, 2001.

One of the most memorable experiences of my life, one that I will never, ever forget, took place at Bank One Ballpark in Arizona in 2001, as I watched my first ever World Series game.

We had just, as a country, experienced the worst attack on our sacred soil, and reeling with shock, we came together as a nation. We were, for a time, united in our patriotism, love for our country and our flag.

And like no one else could have done, as an enormous flag unfurled over the field, and a squadron of planes roared over the stadium, Ray Charles performed his glorious version of “America, the Beautiful.”

There wasn’t a dry eye in the stadium.

And so, to the bended knees of the NFL….read the lyrics and watch the video of the song that he sang that wondrous night:

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
