FLASHBACK: Bernie Sanders Blamed Sarah Palin for Shooting of Gabby Giffords

On Wednesday morning, after spending weeks scouting a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, a fervent Bernie Sanders supporter opened fire on Republican congressmen and senators who were practicing for a charity baseball game. The shooter, identified as 66-year old James. T. Hodgkinson from Belleville, Illinois, was not only a big-time Bernie Bro, he volunteered on Sanders’ presidential campaign, belonged to numerous anti-Trump groups on Facebook, including “Terminate the Republican Party,”and possessed a vicious hatred of President Donald Trump. Incidentally, members of the group celebrated the attack on Republicans after the shooting.

Upon learning that Hodgkinson volunteered on his campaign, socialist Senator Bernie Sanders, who has often angrily called for a revolution in this country, said the following on the Senate floor.

“I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign.”

“I am sickened by this despicable act. Let me be as clear as I can be: Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms.”

But back in 2011, when Democrat Rep. Gabby Giffords was shot in Tucson, Arizona, Sanders was singing a different tune. Although that shooter was not a registered Republican and there was no evidence of him being affiliated with or listening to conservative talk radio or Republican politicians , Sanders not only put blame on former Alaska Governor and 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin, but also worked to tie the shooting to “right-wing reactionaries.”

Sanders felt so strongly about tying the shooting to Republicans and riling up his base, of which Hodgkinson was a part, that he sent out a fundraising letter spouting such vitriolic and incendiary propaganda.

In his email, he blamed the “political climate” as leading to such a horrendous act of violence.

“This horrendous act of violence is not some kind of strange aberration for this area where, it appears, threats and acts of violence are part of the political climate. Nobody can honestly express surprise that such a tragedy finally occurred.”

Senator Sanders also specifically cited Sarah Palin’s “crosshairs” map.

Since Arizona is a red state, he also used this as an opportunity to attack the state’s voting patterns by asking if anyone who is not Republican able to “participate freely and fully in the democratic process.” Again, the shooter in the case of Gabby Giffords was himself not a Republican but why let facts get in the way of your divisive propaganda.

“In light of all of this violence – both actual and threatened – is Arizona a state in which people who are not Republicans are able to participate freely and fully in the democratic process? Have right-wing reactionaries, through threats and acts of violence, intimidated people with different points of view from expressing their political positions?”

Senator Sanders also used his fundraising email as an opportunity to blast Arizona Senator John McCain demanding that McCain “denounce the increasingly violent rhetoric coming from the right-wing.”

“My colleague, Senator John McCain, issued a very strong statement after the shooting in which he condemned the perpetrator of the attack. I commend him for that. But I believe Senator McCain and other Arizona Republicans need to do more. As the elder statesman of Arizona politics McCain needs to stand up and denounce the increasingly violent rhetoric coming from the right-wing and exert his influence to create a civil political environment in his state.”

For the third time, the man who shot Gabby Giffords was not “right-wing” but, hey, that’s all the more money Bernie was able to raise to “steer money to his family and friends.”

Socialists are hypocrites, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that now Sanders expects not to be held account for his calls for a “revolution.” He is not speaking out against calls by Democrats for their supporters to “take it to the streets.” He did not denounce former Obama Attorney General Loretta Lynch and her call for more marching, death, and blood on the streets.

Bernie did not call out Obama for his incendiary remark for progressives to “bring a gun to a knife fight” against Republicans. He did not call out left-wing “journalists” and politicians for their constant pushing of Trump-Russia collusion with no proof whatsoever. He avoided speaking about how the nightly, bloody “assassination” of Trump at Shakespeare in the Park’s “Julius Caesar” in Central Park could have contributed to the mindset of his Republican hating supporter, Hodgkinson. There was no mention of Kathy Griffin “beheading” of Trump or Snoop Dog shooting Trump in a head in a music video.

Of course, now that we know the person who opened fire on that baseball field after confirming that they were Republicans was a rabid Bernie Sanders supporter, we shouldn’t bring politics into it. That should only come into play if it was a Trump supporter or a Republican who shot at Democrats. Heck, in the case of Gabby Giffords, the man didn’t even have to be a Republican. The left and their allies in the media used that event to attack Republicans anyway.

Though many are working overtime to distance Bernie Sanders and his incendiary rhetoric from possibly influencing the actions of his supporter who wanted to “Terminate the Republican Party,” actor James Woods is not one of those people. He reminded Bernie of the time when he blamed Donald Trump’s rhetoric for the “violence of his supporters” and called on him to condemn it.

Perhaps Bernie should be reminded that no Trump supporter burned down buildings and cars or shot at people and stabbed people. His supporters have done all of the above.
